A cruise is a hotel that moves. You unpack once, wake up in a new place and have meals and entertainment on board. For many people it is the easiest way to see several places in one trip. Cruising is what I book most, so I am always happy to answer questions about it, and these are the ones first timers ask me most.

The first is whether a cruise suits you. It tends to work well for first timers who want to see several places without planning each one, for families and groups with different interests, since everyone finds something to do, and for anyone who dislikes the logistics of moving between hotels. It may suit you less if you want a long, slow stay in one destination, or if you do not enjoy being on a ship with many other people.

The next decision is the cabin. An inside cabin has no window and is usually the lowest price. An ocean view cabin has a window, a balcony cabin gives you private outdoor space, and a suite has more room and extra benefits. If you worry about motion at sea, a cabin in the middle of the ship on a lower deck usually feels the steadiest. Modern ships also have stabilizers, and your doctor can advise you on seasickness remedies.

Then comes the question of what is included. Usually your cabin, main meals and onboard entertainment are covered. Drinks packages, specialty restaurants, excursions, Wi-Fi and gratuities often cost extra. This differs between cruise lines and fares, so I check exactly what yours includes before you decide.

You can also choose between ocean and river. Ocean ships are larger, with more to do on board, while river cruises are smaller and slower, with the sights close to the ship. Different cruise lines have different personalities too, from lively and family focused to quiet and refined. I work with a range, so I can match the line to you.

Here in South Africa, some cruises sail from ports such as Durban and Cape Town in season. That can mean no flights at all and a very easy start to the holiday.

When the day arrives, allow time for check in on embarkation day and have your documents ready. In port you can book a ship excursion or explore on your own, and I explain the difference, because your return time to the ship matters.

If you are thinking about your first cruise, send me a message through the contact page. I will ask a few questions and help you find the right ship and cabin.
